Maintaining Enthusiasm in the Workplace
There is a lot of talk about the different generations. For some the new generations X and Y are a relative enigma, where there is evidence of different motivations at play to that of their predecessors, the ‘veterans’ and ‘baby boomers’. For those responsible for the staff welfare, there is an increasing need to understand what motivates people and to maintain a happy and healthy workforce.
“Girl’s just want to have fun” and maybe we all do at some level. Many seek their relaxation and stimulus instantly through alcohol and coffee, while others might maintain their capacity to work under stress through exercise and meditation. Others still might simply struggle to find enough motivation to ‘get through the day’. Many content themselves with income to keep on surviving while others require greater meaning in their lives and a lifestyle that makes sense for the effort they give to their employers. In many cases it isn’t enough for a person to have the lifestyle after work, they require it in the workplace as well.
Whether it be a ‘sea change’ or ‘tree change’ or lifestyle choice or money, people today are awakening to the need that they also want more fun in their work-life. For some it is “happiness” while for others it is about feeling appreciated or being provided an environment where they can grow as a person.
We are learning that health is about more than the physical body, including also our emotional wellbeing and mental state and sense of spirit. If any of these factors are under duress, then the ‘whole’ being in some way is suffering. When the workers are suffering then the business and community that supports it, are also.
In striving for the wellbeing and sustainability of the organisation, the question arises, “how do we maintain and develop the wellbeing of our staff?” What varying needs does this group have? Does each member feel like they are part of a team? Do they feel that their wellbeing is being cared, or that their personal aspirations are being met?
A happy workforce is a healthy workforce, and any person who feels safe and appreciated, is more able to relax and to focus on what they are there for in the first place.
